Hooks:

1. Do not exceed rated capacity.
2. Manufactrurer's Identification shall be forged, cast, or die stamped on a low stress & nonwearingarea of the hook.
3. Approved rigging hooks shall be made from a material which has sufficient ductility to permanently deform;
4. Hook latches required except on grab and sorting hooks.
5. Hook capacities apply when pulled straight in line.
6. Consult manufacturer before angle loading hooks.
7. Avoid shockloading
8. Do not back-load, side-load or tip-load hooks. Only sorting hooks may be tip-loaded.
9. Place load or sling(s) centered in the base of the hook to prevent point loading.
10. Do not place small sling eyes on large hooks.
11. Personnel stand clear of loads.
12. Do not allow any throat closing device to carry the load.
13. Hands, fingers, and body shall be kept from between hook and load.

Remove if:

• Bending or twistiong exceeding 10° from the plane of an unbent hook
• Increase in throat opening exceeding 15 percent
• Wear exceeds 10 percent of the original cross sectional dimension
• Hook latch is inoperative or missing if provided
• Cracks, nicks gouges
• Damaged hook attachment or securing means
• Manufacturer's identification is missing or not legible
• Heat damaged or weld splattered
• Other visible damage that causes doubt as to integrity of the hook
