 Wire Rope Slings
1. Do not exceed rated capacity for the type of hitch used.
2. Minimum of 10 rope diameters between end fittings.
3. Consult manufacturer below - 60°F and over 400°F.
4. Weld and proof test fittings prior to assembly.
5. Slings shall be permanently marked with
manufacturer's name, rated capacities for type of hitchs
and size of wire rope.
6. Use chaffing gear and avoid slippage.
7. Do not drag slings. Do not crush slings.
8. Avoid Shockloads
9. Don't choke on fittings, avoid pinch points.
10. Portions of the human body shall be kept from between
the sling and the load, and between the sling and the hook.
11. Place sling(s) in center bowl of hook.
12. Calculate additional tension due to angles.
13. Do not place small sling eye on large hook.
14. Personnel stand clear of suspended load.
15. pull slings from under loads.
16. Store slings in a cool, dry and dark location.
17. Be alert for possible snagging of the sling.
Remove if evidence of:
• Heat damage
• Birdaging
• Corrosion
• Unstranding
• Kinks
• Crushing
• Broken wires = 10/lay, 5 in 1 strand/lay
• 1/3 wear of outside individual wires
• Distorted rope structure
• Damaged end attachments
• Hooks with 15 percent throat opening or 10° twist
• Severe abrasion
• Core damage
• High stranding
• Core protrusion
• Broken wires near end fitting
